After a very nice Saturday it looks like the weather will be somewhat unsettled for Central Alabama for the next 36 to 48 hours. We’re still dealing with the stationary front just to the north of us plus the ridge that has held the unsettled weather at bay for several days is finally breaking down. The result will be a cloudy day with showers and thunderstorms likely and fairly widespread. Most of us will probably see rainfall amounts in the half inch to one inch category. But some of us may get a double shot – that is a round of showers this morning and another round this afternoon and this evening. In those cases, we may see some spots get as much as 2 inches of rain.

The upper trough axis is forecast to move by us on Monday afternoon which should signal the end to scattered showers and pave the way for a dry mid week. Temperatures will remain about what you would expect for the middle of May here with lows mainly in the 60s and highs in the lower to mid 80s.

A new storm system in the upper atmosphere will come our way into next weekend bringing the potential for scattered showers for Friday and Saturday. This currently looks like primarily a scattered shower situation so no widespread rain with this next system.

Out into voodoo country, the pattern remains fairly active across the northern tier of the US while ridging dominates the Southeast US. The 348 hour GFS output has an interesting look with a surface low in the vicinity of the southern Bahamas. Could this be the start to the 2010 hurricane season? Well, I’m not placing any bets on that just yet, but we’ll see if the GFS keeps that feature in future runs.
