RIGHT NOW: The radar is quiet this morning, and temperatures are generally in the upper 60s with dewpoints in the muggy mid 60s across Alabama. Drier air is not far away; the dewpoint at Tupelo is 62, and down to 55 at Fayetteville, Arkansas.
LATER TODAY: I think we have to mention some risk of a few showers or storms later today as the surface boundary passes through Alabama. The best dynamic lift will be to the north and east; SPC has defined a slight risk of severe weather for the extreme northeast part of Alabama, and then east and northeast to the Atlantic coast (see the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics). Showers and storms that do form around here later today should be pretty widely spaced, and many communities won’t see any additional rain at all. All of the showers should end by midnight tonight as dry air takes over.
MID-WEEK: The weather looks very nice tomorrow and Wednesday. Lots of sunshine, lower humidity, and cooler nights and early mornings. The high will be around 80 with lows in the 50s.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: A warm front moves northward through Alabama Thursday, and that could kick off a shower or storm in spots Thursday afternoon or Thursday night. Friday, we will be in warm, unstable environment with some risk of scattered, mostly afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The high both days will be well into the 80s.
THE WEEKEND: Another dying surface front will try to push into Alabama, but more than likely the drier air behind the front won’t make it. So, the weekend looks very warm and humid with a mix of sun and clouds, and the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. Very much like summer… highs will be in the upper 80s. We do note there has been some inconsistency in model output concerning weekend weather, so be watching for changes through the week.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The last week of May looks very warm with upper ridging taking over. There could be enough moisture for a few scattered showers or storms from time to time, but no organized severe weather threat with the jet so far to the north, up on the Canadian border. The maps are looking more and more like summer, which makes sense since the first day of meteorological summer is only a couple of weeks away.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
