That best describes the weather across Alabama at mid-day. A group of small showers moved east across part of Central Alabama early today, places like Shelby county. But the showers, which were never very heavy, grew tired and dissipated.
That cool front that we have been worshiping is having a tough time. It was somewhere across Central Alabama at noon but not easy to pinpoint. It is leading drier air (lower dewpoints) into the state. That is why we had some low temperatures in the 50s in the valleys of North Alabama this morning. Those 50s will be more widespread tonight.
No quick return of showers but a few will start showing up by Friday.
HOW WE ARE DOING RAINWISE
Not bad at all. At Birmingham Airport, we have received 21.56 inches so far this year–a shortfall of only 1.59. Last year, at this same time, we had received 25.13 inches.
Most reservoirs are in good shape. For example, Lake Purdy, key source for Birmingham Metro water, is at 551.25 feet. Full pool is 551.
ALABAMA AGRICULTURE WEATHER
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field Office, Montgomery, reports this week that a mere 9% of the state is short on top soil moisture. 88% is adequate and a small percent is too wet. Only 7% of the crop and Livestock was in poor condition.
Great to be droughtless!
Will post a more complete agriculture/weather story later today.
