NICE AND COOL: Nice to see a few 40s on the map this morning. Vic Bell up in the small community of Scrougeout, in Northeast Etowah County, is reporting 47 degrees. Cullman and Haleyville are at 48, and Birmingham reports 54 degrees at 5:00 a.m. Today promises to be a delightful day, with ample sunshine and a high around 80. The humidity will stay low.
TO THE WEST: Looks like another big severe weather day for Oklahoma, where SPC has placed a moderate risk. A nasty bow echo is moving through this morning, and a few significant tornadoes are possible later today and tonight. Storm chasers will be out in full force.
TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: The surface front over far South Alabama will lift northward tomorrow in response to the system in the Southern Plains. This could kick off a shower or storm late in the day or tomorrow night, but models look pretty dry, keeping most of the rain to the west of Alabama. Friday seems to be the day with the best chance of a few showers and storms as the short wave passes north of Alabama, but the 00Z models did trend drier. We will mention a chance of scattered showers and storms Friday, but the best coverage should be over far North Alabama, and points north.
THE WEEKEND: An upper ridge begins to build across the eastern U.S. This will set the stage for a summer-like weekend, with highs around the 90 degree mark. The warm air aloft associated with the upper ridge will keep any afternoon showers widely spaced, and much of the weekend will be dry.
NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Sure looks like some routine summer weather next week. Warm, humid days with a partly sunny sky, and some risk of a passing shower or storm during the afternoon and evening hours. The really organized weather systems remain to the west and north of the state. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range thoughts.
