Just getting ready for the 5 AM news, and I am staring at some very heavy storms up in northwestern Alabama. The NWS radar estimates up in Marion County, based on the Shelby County Airport Doppler, show anywhere from 4 to 6 inches of rain has fallen in the Rock City-Brilliant-Winfield areas.
Amounts like this are very spotty this morning, but the storms have developed in response to several factors all coming together in NW Alabama: the outflow jet (band of stronger upper-air winds) associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin over Texas, lots of low-level heat and humidity, and a weak surface pressure trough in northern Alabama.
This will play havoc with the temperature forecasts today. It looks like some places may struggle to get to 95 while other may have no problem getting to 100!
See you on Good Morning Alabama!
