BEACH TRIP? I will write a new version of “Spann’s Best Way To The Bama Beaches” before the week is over… so if you are headed to Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, and want a real adventure through the back roads of South Alabama, stay tuned. You won’t get there in a hurry, but you will have a trip full of sights and places most folks don’t know about.
THIS AFTERNOON: A couple of strong storms have popped up over Northeast Alabama… specifically over Jackson, DeKalb, Etowah, and Cherokee counties. Powerlines have been blown down atop Lookout Mountain around Mentone; those storms are moving slowly to the southwest, and will be in the Gadsden area shortly. These will die down later this evening once the sun goes down.
REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow and Friday look relatively quiet, with very warm afternoons. Highs should be around 90, and any afternoon showers will be very isolated. We will have a northerly flow in place, so we will be watching radars over Tennessee and Kentucky for any potential surprise thunderstorm areas that might form up that way. But, I do think most places will be dry through Friday.
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: The GFS continues to trend a little wetter for the weekend. No, that doesn’t mean a “wet weekend”, but an upper low wants to drift into Alabama from the east, which set the stage for a chance of scattered showers and storms Saturday through Monday. The 12Z run suggests Saturday would be the day with the best coverage of showers and storms, with them thinning out Sunday and Monday. Bottom line is that for now we will just mention a chance of scattered, mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms over the holiday weekend, with highs in the 85 to 90 degree range.
VOODOO LAND: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS continues the idea of a cool, deep upper trough over the eastern U.S. in the June 4-7 time frame. That has great potential to bring cooler air down this way if the model happens to be correct, and there has been good consistency in recent runs.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
