HERE COMES THE HEAT: We all know it is coming now that June is here… the Alabama heat. We are expecting the hottest weather so far this year today and over the weekend, with highs up in the mid 90s. Most places will see highs in the 92 to 95 degree range, and with the high dewpoints in place the afternoon heat index will hover around 100 for a while each afternoon. With a strong upper ridge developing, afternoon storms that form should be pretty isolated, and many neighborhoods will be dry. Must be summer in Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: The heat ridge weakens just a bit next week, but the models are trending hotter for the first half of next week, showing mid 90s on Monday and Tuesday with only isolated afternoon storms. Highs drop into the low 90s during the latter half of the week with a little better chance of a cooling afternoon shower or storm. The primary belt of mid-latitude westerlies will stay well to the north of Alabama.

AT THE BEACH: The upper high means mostly rain-free weather for the Central Gulf Coast through Sunday, with mostly sunny days and clear nights. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s for inland communities. The sea water temperature at Pensacola Beach last night was 87 degrees.

TROPICS: The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season is now in it’s 11th day, and all remains quiet. Usually the peak of the season comes later, in August and September; NOAA is forecasting 14 to 23 named storms, 8 to 14 hurricanes, and 3 to 7 major hurricanes. The outlook ranges exceed the seasonal average of 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.
