HOT SUMMER DAYS: We are that time of the year when weather changes here are slow and ill defined. Our weather is hot and humid just about every day in June, July, and August, and it rains somewhere most afternoons. The forecast dilemma is figuring out the placement and coverage of afternoon storms, and heat levels. The only thing that will really bust up this summer routine is tropical systems, and we don’t expect that around here in the short term.
THIS WEEK: The upper ridge will weaken a bit this week as the upper trough that has been out west lifts out and passes north of Alabama. This should mean afternoon highs dropping from the mid 90s into the low 90s (I honestly don’t know if most people will be able to notice this), and a slow increase in the number of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The NAM is a little more aggressive with the coverage of storms this afternoon (the GFS still shows only isolated ones), but both models show a pretty decent chance of seeing an afternoon shower or thunderstorm tomorrow).
We will maintain a chance of afternoon showers and storms on through mid-week with highs at or just over 90 on Wednesday and Thursday.
FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The ridge becomes a little stronger, meaning highs back in the mid 90s and only isolated afternoon showers and storms Friday through Sunday. Another words, this coming weekend looks much like the one we just enjoyed. Hot is the word.
TROPICS: A well organized, low latitude disturbance is in the Atlantic about halfway between the coast of Africa and the Lesser Antilles. Seems like this has a chance of becoming a tropical depression in coming days; NHC pegs that chance at 60 percent (I am not a big fan of using numeric probabilities like this in a tropical outlook, but that is just me). Systems in this region rarely develop this early in the season, but the water is warmer than average, and upper air winds seem to be favorable. Most models bring this to a minimal tropical storm, but nothing beyond that. See the Weather Xtreme video for more; the system should be near the Leeward Islands by the end of the week.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will record this week’s episode tomorrow night.
