TRIPLE DIGITS: Birmingham has managed to reach the 100 degree mark as of the 3:00 p.m. observation from the Birmingham Airport. The dewpoint has mixed down to 65, the humidity is 31 percent, and the heat index is 103. Other observations include 98 at Tuscaloosa and Huntsville, 96 at Anniston, and 93 at Gadsden. As expected, showers and storms are very hard to fine; a few isolated ones are showing up east of I-65, but places remain dry.

OUR WEEKEND: Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we cool down at all tomorrow; highs will be back in the 97 to 100 degree range with only a small risk of any one community seeing a passing storm during the afternoon. The heat backs down a few degrees Sunday, with highs in the mid 90s along with a better chance of scattered showers and storms thanks to an increase in tropical moisture.

BONNIE HAVING A HARD TIME: Tropical storm Bonnie is barely a tropical storm. The system is disorganized, pressure fields seem to be rising, and convection is well to the north of the center. The system will move across the Gulf of Mexico tonight and tomorrow, and strong winds aloft will prevent this from becoming a hurricane. In fact, there is some risk that Bonnie won’t survive much longer, so this certainly won’t be the “dangerous storm” you hear the media talking about, and it certainly doesn’t warrant a “state of emergency”. The main issue will be heavy rain, but even that won’t be too bad with disorganized system. The bulk of the deeper moisture will move over Louisiana, Arkansas, and the western half of Mississippi Sunday and Monday.

NEXT WEEK: The 5940 meter 500 mb ridge just won’t go away, so temperatures next week will remain well up in the 90s, with afternoon storms begin rather widely scattered. No sign of any really widespread rain for our state for the next 7 days.
