SUMMER HEAT: The last time we had a high under 90 was on Independence Day… back on July 4 our high was only 87. So, today will be the 25th consecutive day with a high of 90 or higher, and the streak will likely continue for at least the next 7 days with no major relief expected.

TODAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: The air is relatively dry, so afternoon showers and storms should be widely spaced through Saturday. Heat levels will creep up, with mid 90s likely. Some spots could reach the upper 90s, but hopefully the good top soil moisture will keep it in the mid 90s for the short term. The GFS has been consistent with the idea of deeper moisture creeping into the state from the east and south Sunday with a better coverage of afternoon showers and storms by then.

NEXT WEEK: Monday and Tuesday look very hot with the ridge becoming stronger. We will forecast highs in the 97 to 100 degree range on these two days, with heat index values over 100. Then, over the latter half of the week, the core of the heat bubble is suppressed to the west, so heat levels should drop off a bit with increasing coverage of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

TROPICS: Still nothing brewing out there across the vast tropical Atlantic. There is one decent wave in the low latitudes that came off the coast of Africa a couple of days ago, but no sign of organization. I imagine this is the quiet before the storm; expect a big pickup in action out there by mid-August.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
