LOOKING FOR RAIN: Hopefully we will find some later today, but if you don’t get wet today, your chances will be even better tomorrow and Sunday as the tropical low, formerly known as Tropical Depression Five, hangs around the Gulf Coast states.
Yesterday’s heat was just nasty. The official high in Birmingham was 102, which tied the record set in 2007; Huntsville soared to 103. Today we are forecasting a high in the mid 90s, which is certainly hot, but at least we are moving in the right direction. Showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight will be scattered, but some spots could see heavy amounts of rain under the stronger storms. A good example was last night in Bear Creek up in Northwest Alabama, where our Skywatcher measured 1.65″ of rain in a relatively short amount of time. The chance of any one spot getting wet later today or tonight is about one in three.
OUR WEEKEND: We expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms tomorrow and Sunday with a deep layer of tropical moisture in place. No, it won’t rain all the time, and the sun will be shining occasionally. But, just understand a shower or thunderstorm will be possible at just about any time, even into the late night hours. The heat will also continue to back down… the NAM is printing a high of only 89 for Birmingham tomorrow and Sunday, with the GFS in the low 90s. We will project highs mostly in the low 90s tomorrow and Sunday, but there is a real chance a few spots could hold under the 90 degree mark for the first time since July 4.
NEXT WEEK: Not much change. Very moist air stays in place, and the tropical low just hangs around. The GFS even gives some hint of the circulation getting into the far northern Gulf of Mexico with a potential increase in organization. The chance of showers and storms will stay relatively high for much of the week, with highs in the 88 to 93 degree range. Just what the doctor ordered for a parched state.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is relatively quiet, and additional tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.
