RIGHT NOW: Sure looks and feels like a summer afternoon across Alabama with hot, muggy conditions and a few widely scattered showers. Radar at 3:15 shows the most concentrated shower and storm activity over southern Walker and northern Jefferson Counties. The showers are barely moving at all, so some neighborhoods will get heavy amounts of rain. But, a large percentage of the countryside is dry. Temperatures range from 82 at Decatur (thanks to a nearby shower) to 96 at Montgomery. Anniston is at 95, while Birmingham reports 89.

REST OF THE WEEK: No big change tomorrow and Friday. Partly sunny, hot, humid days with the risk of isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be mostly in the low 90s, and the chance of any one spot getting wet is about one in five.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tomorrow night’s Auburn/Mississippi State game at Scott Field in Starkville, the weather will be very warm and very humid, with a kickoff temperature around 87, falling to near 80 by the fourth quarter. There is some risk of a shower or thunderstorm, mainly during the first half of the game. Looking ahead to the Saturday night battle between Alabama and Penn State at Bryant Denny Stadium, for now will have to mention a chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the game, with temperatures falling from near 86 at kickoff to 80 by the final whistle.

OUR WEEKEND: There would very well be a little increase in the number of scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, but still the rain most likely won’t be especially widespread. Drier air arrives Sunday; the northern half of the state will be dry, while scattered showers and storms should be confined to South Alabama. We will reach the low to mid 90s Saturday, but the high will be closer to 90 Sunday with lower humidity.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks fairly comfortable with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, with lows between 60 and 65. The cooler spots should reach the upper 50s.

EYEING IGOR (EE-gor): A new tropical storm has formed in the far eastern Atlantic, not too far from the coast of Africa. Igor is packing estimated winds of 40 mph, and should become a hurricane in coming days as it moves to the west/northwest. This has the potential to become a major hurricane down the road, and it is too early to determine if it will impact the U.S. mainland. However, we do note the GFS has been very persistent in the idea of the system recurving into the open Atlantic before reaching the U.S. East Coast. But again, it is just too early to call.

REST OF THE TROPICS: Former Tropical Storm Hermine is still producing flooding and some severe weather over North Texas and Oklahoma this afternoon; the deep moisture will curve to the east, impacting parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, and northern Tennessee later this week. And, the remnant wave associated with Tropical Storm Gaston is having a very hard time surviving just south of Hispaniola.
