HOT AND HUMID: The weather will continue to feel a little more like August today and tomorrow with highs in the low 90s with a partly sunny sky. We will continue to mention a chance of widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening thunderstorms with a decent amount of low level moisture in place. The GFS continues to suggest drier air will slip into North Alabama today with dewpoints dropping into the 50s, but I don’t see much evidence of that on surface charts this morning. Bottom line is that the weather probably won’t change much through tomorrow… the chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in five.

OUR WEEKEND: A surface front will pass through Alabama this weekend, but the timing remains up in the air. The latest runs are a little slower with the front suggesting it might be Sunday night before the drier air arrives. No doubt there will be an increase in the number of scattered showers and storms around here Saturday afternoon into Saturday night, and if the 12Z runs confirm that slower movement, we might need to hang on to some risk of a shower or storm into Sunday, especially for areas along and south of I-20. Highs will remain mostly in the low 90s over the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight’s Auburn/Mississippi State game at Scott Field in Starkville, the weather will be very warm and very humid, with a kickoff temperature around 87, falling to near 80 by the fourth quarter. There is some risk of a shower or thunderstorm, mainly during the first half of the game. Looking ahead to the Saturday night battle between Alabama and Penn State at Bryant Denny Stadium, for now will have to mention a chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the game, with temperatures falling from near 86 at kickoff to 80 by the fi

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Igor formed yesterday in the far eastern Atlantic, just south of the Cape Verde Islands, off the coast of Africa. While top winds are estimated to be near 45 mph now, the system is expected to ramp up into a major hurricane by the weekend as it moves to the west/northwest. The thinking for now is that Igor will recurve into the Atlantic before reaching the East Coast of the U.S. One way or another it doesn’t look like a Gulf of Mexico storm at this time. Another wave is over the Windward Islands that bears watching. The remnant wave that was former Tropical Storm Gaston is hanging on for dear life in the northern Caribbean.
