RIGHT NOW: This last day of summer, as expected, is hot across Alabama. Temperatures at 3:00 range from 90 at the Shelby County Airport in Calera to 96 at Muscle Shoals… not quite as hot as recent days. And, once again, we have a few isolated storms on radar. The stronger ones at 3:15 were north of Gadsden, near Roanoke, and near Emelle in West Alabama’s Sumter County. All of the storms will fade quickly once the sun sets this evening.
TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: Not much change. Partly sunny days, highs in the low 90s, and only isolated afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms.
THE WEEKEND: We expect a general increase in the number of scattered showers and storms Saturday with an upper low developing northwest of Alabama, and a surface boundary creeping into the state from the north. Then, rain will be more widespread Sunday as the ULL sets up shop over Arkansas, and a deep flow of moisture sets up over Alabama. The high will be close to 90 Saturday, but it will drop into the low 80s Sunday due to the clouds and rain.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A number of Alabama fans have asked us about weather in Arkansas Saturday… Alabama plays Arkansas in Fayetteville at 2:30. Looks like a beautiful day for football, with a sunny sky and temperatures only in the mid to upper 70s at kickoff with a north breeze at 7 to 14 mph. Auburn will host South Carolina at Jordan Hare Stadium Saturday evening at 6:45… a shower or storm is possible during the game (especially during the first half), with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s. We will deal with the high school and other college games here tomorrow morning.
NEXT WEEK: The 12Z GFS holds the upper low west of Alabama through Wednesday, and at this point it looks like some very welcomed rain is likely on a daily basis, with scattered to numerous showers and storms Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday with highs in the 79 to 82 degree range. Drier air creeps into the state Thursday and Friday.
TROPICS: Tropical Storm Lisa in the far East Atlantic will move only very slowly to the northwest in coming days, and won’t be close to any landmass. The wave in the Caribbean should become Tropical Storm Matthew during the next 48 hours; most of the dynamic model guidance takes the system to the Central America coast, followed by a turn to the north. The 12Z GFS brings the system close to Key West and Miami, and then north, just off the East Coast of Florida. Later it hooks back toward the coast of the Carolinas. The ECMWF is in general agreement with this idea, although faster. This track would keep Alabama on the dry side of the storm, would bring some potentially cool air down into our state in the October 2-6 time frame. This remains in voodoo land, and things could change, of course. See the Weather Xtreme video for details. Our friends over South Florida and the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas will need to monitor this one closely.

I had a great time today at C.F. Hard Elementary in Bessemer, and at the Salvation Army fundraiser at midday as a “celebrity waiter”. I am happy to report I did not dump food in anybody’s lap. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
