RIGHT NOW: Temperatures over the northern half of Alabama range from 70 at Huntsville and Decatur to 78 at Tuscaloosa. The sky is mostly sunny with a few passing high clouds. All in all a delightful early fall day.

REST OF THE WEEK: The weather won’t change much through Friday, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the 50s. The humidity will remain low, and there is no chance of rain.

THE WEEKEND: A fresh supply of cool, dry air moves into the state this weekend, prolonging the dry conditions into next week. Highs over the weekend will be in the mid 70s Saturday, with low 70s Sunday. Morning lows will remain in the 50s, with 40s for the cooler valleys early Sunday. Monday looks like the coolest morning, with most places seeing a low between 46 and 52 degrees.

VOODOO LAND: The 12Z GFS introduces a little model madness, with a strong short wave showing up around October 10 west of Alabama, which would set up a good rain event. But, there is a real chance this thing will vanish on future runs, so don’t take it to the bank. And, still some evidence of tropical issues over the Northwest Caribbean during the first half of October. Let’s not forget the Gulf remains very warm with plenty of latent heat energy just waiting to be released and transferred.

TD16: This tropical depression in the Caribbean is expected to become Tropical Storm Nicole tonight or tomorrow. It will move in the direction of South Florida, and then up the Atlantic coast. The highest winds will remain well to the east of the storm center, over open water… and Nicole is expected to transform into a non-tropical low by Thursday. The main impact for the East Coast will be heavy rain and rough surf; some places could see 5 to 10 inches of rain from Miami north to Boston in coming days. All of this, of course, will remain well to the east of Alabama.
