The first spiral band associated with now Tropical Depression Humberto is approaching central Alabama this afternoon. Satellite and radar show that the band extended from Albany, GA to Troy, AL to Meridian, MS at 350 pm, moving north at about 25 mph. That should bring this main band of rain into Birmingham by around sunset. (Scroll down to see Vic Bell’s pictures in post earlier today of sunrise…remember, “Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.” That one works pretty well, since red skies are associated with clouds covering all but the edge of the horizon the sun is on. In the morning, that’s east, so clouds moving in. In the evening, that’s west, clouds moving out, “sailor’s delight”.)
But, additional showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain were out ahead of the main band, over parts of Pickens and Greene counties, and over east-central Alabama from Anniston to Lake Martin.
With the center of Humberto expected to move into western Mississippi around midnight, then to near Demopolis, AL, by Friday afternoon, expect rain to increase over Alabama tonight and tomorrow. James discusses rainfall amounts in the video.
