A tornado watch remains in effect generally for the areas south of I-59 through 7:00. A number of strong storms are in progress… some of the heavier ones at 4:45 were near Billingsley, Wadley, and over Lake Mitchell. There have been no tornado warnings for Alabama since midday, but the NWS in Jackson has issued a few severe thunderstorm warnings for counties in East Mississippi.
We have seen occasional rotational signatures on radar, but I think the NWS is going a great job in holding off on tornado warnings since these signatures have produced little in the way of severe weather over the past 36 hours across this part of Alabama. Still, we note that surface based CAPE values are running over 1,500 j/kg in spots, dewpoints are in the low 70s, and there is some degree of low level helicity, so we will keep a close eye on the radar through the evening hours. Storms will diminish slowly tonight, but some could linger after midnight.
