COOL, DAMP DAY: Periods of light rain will continue across Alabama through tonight as the upper low near Houston moves slowly southeast. Rain amounts will be around one-quarter inch in most spots; the NAM is printing 0.26″, while the GFS is very similar with 0.23″. Some locations will barely get enough rain to measure. Temperatures will hold in the cool 50s much of the day, although we should rise briefly into the low 60s this afternoon. The rain will end after midnight tonight as drier begins to roll into the state.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: The sky becomes mostly sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 60s, but look out for colder air Friday. A brisk north wind will usher in the coldest air so far this fall season. While we expect a sunny sky Friday, temperatures will struggle to reach the low to mid 50s with a very chilly north wind. You will need a warm jacket Friday night for the high school football playoff games.

FIRST FREEZE: We are still projecting the first widespread freeze of the season early Saturday, with low temperatures in the 27 to 32 degree range under a clear sky with a light wind. Sunday morning could be just as cold, but then a slow warming trend begins Sunday afternoon as temperatures rise into the low 60s. The air will be very dry, and you can expect maximum available sunshine both days.

TIME CHANGE! Don’t forget, we gain one hour of sleep this weekend as we go back on standard time. Set the clocks back one hour before you go to bed Saturday night.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: Looks like dry and seasonal weather for the first half of next week with highs mostly in the 60s and lows in the 40s. The 00Z GFS suggests the next chance of rain will come at the end of next week with a passing cold front. A more significant rain event is shaping up in the November 15-17 time frame, but confidence is low due to inconsistent model output. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TOMAS STRUGGLING: The tropical system in the Caribbean has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it looks very unorganized this morning. NHC still expects this to strengthen again, becoming a minimal hurricane as it moves over Haiti Friday night. We also note a hurricane watch has been posted for Jamaica. This system poses no threat to the U.S. mainland.
