The bitter cold is on the way. Here is a Southeast to Northwest Temperature profile based on 2 am data:
48 Birmingham
38 Haleyville
38 Tupelo
28 Olive Branch, Miss., south of Memphis
29 Memphis with wind gusts to 42 mph
22 Rogers, Ark., with flurries, NW winds gusting to 38 with wind chill 5
By tonight (Sunday night) we expect the wind chill to be near zero in Birmingham.
The main line of showers ahead of the cold air, is now well to the east. At 2:40am, the line was from near Greenville, S. C., to just east of Atlanta, to the SE corner of Alabama. The line is quite narrow and almost all of the lightning is no more.
By daybreak it should be freezing or lower for the Birmingham area and much of North and Central Alabama. This leads to the possibility of a period of light freezing rain and a bit of black ice. So if you are out driving early this morning, caution is advised. Black ice is hard to see. We also expect flurries or snow showers today but little or no accumulation. It will be in the teens overnight tonight and it will struggle to reach freezing during the day Monday.
A wind Advisory is in effect until 6 pm today and a Hard Freeze Watch through Monday morning. The wind will be gusting to 35 mph at times today so this Sunday is going to be a raw, cold day.
