Okay, I know JB Elliott opened the freezer door last night and forgot to shut it! As a result, very frigid arctic air was filtering into Central Alabama with an interesting temperature gradient this morning from 34 at Tuscaloosa to 43 at Anniston/Oxford. Do not look for much change in temperature today as values are likely to continue to fall at most locations with readings during the afternoon in the 30s. The high at the Birmingham Airport – in fact, at nearly all locations across Central Alabama – occurred at midnight! That was 53 which will be the official high for the day. We will remain cloudy and windy – Wind Advisory in effect today – with the possibility of snow flurries in the cold air.

The clouds should move on out later tonight though we could see a few breaks in the clouds today. That should pave the way for sun on Monday but it is going to be down right shivery with a morning low of 16 and an afternoon high of 31 or 32. We don’t see too many days where the temperature remains below freezing, but tomorrow is likely to be one of those.

Slow moderation occurs as the upper flow goes dramatically zonal by mid-week. But moderation only means we get back close to typical temperature values for this time of year.

As the surface high moves off to our east, moisture will return on Wednesday and Thursday with Thursday bringing the best rain chance for the upcoming week. This is expected to be more of a patchy rain/shower situation with spotty rainfall amounts. A short wave trough over the western Great Lakes will dig into the East again by Friday bringing an end to the slight warm up. However, this next system is not expected to be as strong or as cold as the one we are experiencing now. So look for another round of cold weather next weekend. There is not likely to be much precipitation with this system.

Looking well out into the future, there is very little change as we see a continuation of deep troughs and the cold weather. On this run, Christmas in Central Alabama looks cold but dry.
