Here is a list of some cold temperatures from far and wide. See other blog posts on how this could possibly affect Alabama down the road:

We get reports from well over 400 Russian weather stations each hour. The coldest I could find this morning was 75 blow zero at Ojmjakon. The Russian Weather Service is projecting a low of 81 below there in the next 24 hours. Several other stations had current temperatures between 50 and 55 below. Examples from that huge country:

-75 Ojmjakon
-54 Ust-Moma
-55 Ust-Maja
-55 Verhojansk

OTHERS
-13 Alert (northernmost weather station in Canada and North America)
24 above zero Dawson, Yukon, NW Canada
27 Mayo, Yukon, light snow
12 at Barrow on the North Coast of Alaska (now in the long winter of no sun)
-10 Northway (coldest in Alaska overnight*
2 above zero at Good Ole Deadhorse**

USA EXTREMES (Lower 48 states)
86 Tuesday, Edinburg, Tex.
-16 this AM at Merrill, Wisc.

* NWS, Fairbanks projecting lows of about 25 below zero next Sunday night and Monday night for such notable cold spots as Fort Yukon and Circle Hot Springs.

** A polar bear was discovered once roaming the hallway on the second floor of the hotel in Deadhorse. I would have jumped out the window, even from the second floor.i
