As the headline indicates, the weather across Central Alabama remains busy but certainly not as busy as last weekend and the winter weather. The Skycam shot from Cheaha showed the snow still lingering on Alabama’s highest location.
A surface high situated over the lower Mississippi River Valley will keep us dry today, however, with a good northwesterly fetch aloft we’ll see some clouds. In the upper atmosphere at 500 millibars – roughly 18 to 20 thousand feet – the long wave trough remains over the eastern half of the country and will for much of the week. The result is that we will see some slight warming, however, we remain relatively cold with lows and highs below values we typically see around the middle of January – lows around 32 and highs around 52.
Monday a short wave trough will move quickly across northern Mexico and the Gulf of Mexico bringing rain chances for late Monday and Tuesday. That short wave moves quickly allowing us to dry out by Wednesday. However, with the long wave trough anchored over the eastern half of the country, we’ll continue to see an active pattern with a steady stream of short wave troughs moving through the long wave trough position. This means a short-lived warm up with highs 55 to 58 on Tuesday. But as the big trough gets reinforced by Friday we should see another round of cold days with lows in the 20s and highs only in the 40s. Fortunately with a dry pattern we should not have to deal with anything in the way of serious winter weather – just the cold air.
Rainfall amounts will be light with the upcoming event. I would not expect to see amounts beyond a half inch or so.
Peering further into voodoo country, the active pattern remains that way while the long wave trough stays put. This means continued cold weather for the eastern half of the country.

It sure has been nice to see the sun over the last couple of days. Some how the sunshine makes the cold not feel quite as bad. I expect to have the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video posted by 7:30 or 8 on Sunday morning. I hope that you have a great day and Godspeed.
