Looks like the work week will start wet, but for today, we remain dry while the clouds increase as a result of the weather system just to our west. At the surface, a large high pressure system stretched from the North Central US into the Southeast. In the upper atmosphere, we’ve been plagued by the long wave trough positioned over the eastern US and it looks like that will not be changing much while a continual stream of disturbances bring us rain threats – possibly winter weather threats next week.
Highs today will reach close to 50 degrees – still a little below where we ought to be for mid January. Rain and clouds will stick around Monday and Tuesday with rainfall amounts for most locations near a half inch. By Wednesday we come under a weak ridge which should produce a dry day as well as a somewhat mild day with lows in the mid 30s and highs in the upper 40s.
Another upper level disturbance swings by on Friday which will bring another round of wetness for Thursday evening into early Friday. But as the long wave shores up again, look for another cold weekend with lows in the 20s and highs in the 30s.
The long range looks continues to be active. The long wave trough remains anchored over the eastern half of the country, so do not look for any significant change to the cold weather if this pattern is true. Plus there appears to be moisture with two systems, one around the 26th and one around the 31st. This could mean a winter weather threat for the Southeast US, but remember it is well out into voodoo so it is likely to change. The overwhelming message from the long range charts, however, is a continuation of the cold.
