Okay, I’m beginning to look for that nice little warm up we often experience in late January or early February that let’s us know that winter will not hold on forever. But at least for now, there seems to be no sign of a break in the cold for the foreseeable future.

Temperatures are in the minus 40s across parts of Central Canada this morning – but fortunately not that cold here. In fact, clouds came in last night that helped to keep our temperatures from going as low as they could have especially when you look at the dew points across Central Alabama – many of them in the single digits. My daughter in Chicago went to work yesterday morning with a low at O’Hare Airport of -4! Give me Spring – and NOW ! ! !

Looks like we stay chilly and dry through the weekend. The clouds should give way to some sunshine by late morning and into the afternoon. Sunday will remain dry, too, but clouds come surging back into the picture by afternoon and evening. Highs today will stay in the 40s but we could get close to 50 on Sunday. All of these projected highs, by the way, are still below the typical high of 53.

Monday a strong short wave will come into the long wave trough to bring another reinforcing shot of cold air along with a chance for rain. It looks like the chances for rain are not very high since the atmosphere is relatively dry. But we will be cloudy and there will be some light rain possible. Rain chances stick around into Tuesday with the potential for the rain to change over to snow before ending late in the day Tuesday or Tuesday night. I think the change over will be quick and brief based on current forecasts, so I do not expect to see any serious issues with whatever winter precipitation occurs.

Skies will clear on Wednesday but it stays cold. Look for highs to be in the 40s through the end of the week along with lows in the 20s. We could see a slight moderation in temperature Saturday and Sunday – that’s next weekend – but it sure looks like the long wave trough position will continue over the eastern half of the country keeping us in the deep freeze.

And snow lovers will just be tickled pink with what the GFS long range forecasts are suggesting. But I think the real value of the long range forecasts is the consistency of the long wave trough over the eastern US which means that we will not be seeing much warm weather any time soon.

Well, don’t even think about putting those winter coats away for some time yet. Looks like the winter grip has a firm hold on the eastern half of the country.
