This morning a strong high pressure area (1042 millibars) was centered over New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. It, by habit, was pushing (colder) (cooler) air down the east coast into the Carolinas and Georgia, then curving westward. Brisk winds involved.
Look at this temperature profile. All these temperatures we observed at 6 am, CST:
34 in Charlotte
39 Columbia
45 Athens
48 Atlanta
51 Anniston
56 Birmingham
58 Columbus, Miss.
61 Greenwood, Miss.
A wedge is very interesting. It demands attention when forecasting, otherwise it can destroy a forecast. Fortunately all of us are used to that and we watch closely. Even so. we can be several degrees off track. Across Central Alabama, during a wedge, the wind is almost always out of the east and quite brisk at times. The east wind was gusting to 36 mph on the Mt. Cheaha Skycam.
I was out walking a small 8-pound animal before sunrise and. even if I had not checked the weather beforehand , I would have detected the wedge immediately after stepping out the door.
Just another interesting feature about the weather. There are hundreds.
