WARM DAYS: I guess we can now officially call it spring weather beginning Sunday since the vernal equinox is Sunday evening at 6:21 p.m. local time. Temperatures at 3:00 this afternoon include 83 at Greenville, 82 at Montgomery and 81 at Muscle Shoals. Birmingham is at 79… we should reach the low 80s easily since our maximum temperature comes between 4:00 and 5:30 this time of the year. Not a cloud in the sky.
THE WEEKEND: No real change tomorrow… lots of sun with a high around 80. We will have to watch for the CAD effect Sunday (cold air damming)… cold air over the Northeast U.S. will slide down the mountains, pushing down into the Carolinas and Georgia. It could very well be a day on which Tuscaloosa has a high of 82, and places like Heflin and Wedowee have a high of 65. We will stick with the warmer solution for most of the state, but keep in mind if you are near the Georgia border you could see clouds and cooler temperatures Sunday thanks to the wedge.
BIG MOON: A full Moon of rare size and beauty will rise in the east at sunset Saturday…. It’s a super “perigee moon”–the biggest in almost 20 years. The last full Moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993. Nearby perigee moons are about 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser moons that occur on the apogee side of the Moon’s orbit. Read more here.
NEXT WEEK: We stay warm and dry Monday and Tuesday… a weak front could kick off a few showers Wednesday evening, but with no real upper air support, rain amounts should be very light and spotty. The air will be a little cooler Thursday and Friday, but still pretty mild for March. Some evidence rain could return to the state around Saturday March 26… see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
LONG RANGE: With a negative NAO spike around the first of April, it still looks like we will be dealing with at least one more freeze this season. Again… see the Weather Xtreme video for the long range ideas. We also note the 12Z GFS is showing potential for active thunderstorms around April 3.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
