* 3.8 percent is how much of the Lower 48 had a snow cover this morning. Heavy snow fell at a number of locations in the NW USA over the weekend.

* 14 inches of snow at Sylvania, Pennsylvania in the last 24 hours.

* 5 inches of new snow at the Paradise Ranger Station in Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington state in the last 24 hours.

* 201 inches was how much snow was on the ground early today at Squaw Flat, Idaho. That is one of those out-of-the-way remote automated snow measuring stations.

* 93 was the warmest (well, hottest is a better word) at Brooksville, Florida yesterday.

* 14 was the coldest in the Lower 48 this morning, at Sparta, Wisconsin.

* 20 below zero was the coldest in Alaska, at Chandalar Lake.

* 24.66 inches is the current 2007 rain deficiency for Huntsville as of this morning.

* 21.42 inches if the Birmingham shortage. We have received only 25.23 inches so far this year. Last year, on this same date, we had received 52.32 inches.

* 28.08 is the whopping rain defecit for Tuscaloosa so far.

* 19 degrees with freezing fog was the temperature atop Mt. Washington, New Hampshire around noon. Visibility was zero and a WNW wind was gusting to 66 mph with a wind chill of 5 below. A raw day at one of our favorite weather spots!

* 57 below zero was the temperature at Summit, Greenland, on the ice cap.

* 42 below zero was the temperature last evening at Eureka in Northern Canada. No doubt the polar bears are throwing a huge party.

* 5,000 is how many free Thanksgiving dinners Louis Pizitz gave to the needy from his Pizitz Department Store in Downtown Birmingham on November 24, 1932. That item from the Birmingham Public Library. It was in the middle of the Great Depression and there were plenty of needy folks. I was 7 months old at the time but I do remember the latter part of the depression growing up in Hale County. Everything was rationed and you had to present rationing stamps to buy almost anything. Sometimes the owner of the local country store in Havana Junction would cut one pound of butter or lard into 4 sections to make it go around. (This has nothing to do with weather but I wanted to end on a pleasant note. I still miss the Pizitz stores.
