A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues for five counties in Northwest Alabama until 8 o’clock tonight:
Lamar
Marion
Franklin
Colbert
Lauderdale
At 4 o’clock, showers and storms were still scarce across the area. One storm was moving out of East Cherokee County into Northwest Georgia. There were small showers or storms east of Winfield in South Marion County and north of Fayette. There were several over the NW corner of the state.
Thunderstorms were much more impressive over NW Mississippi, West and Middle Tennessee and into East Kentucky.
Nickle size hail was reported earlier this afternoon in Nashville. Near Russellville, Ky., nickle size hail covered the ground and large trees were down. Tops of silos were ripped off. A trained weather spotter reported a tornado at Pittsburgh, Ky., near the intersection of I-75 and Highway 80.
Thunderstorms will become more numerous and stronger across North Alabama this evening.
THE METRO BIRMINGHAM RUSH HOUR
Unless storms develop rather quickly, much of the afternoon rush hour should be relatively free of storms.
