An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

Despite 40 years in the weather business, I remain amazed at how quickly the weather in the Southeast US can turn around. This morning we are nearly 20 degrees warmer than we were yesterday. Still a bit cooler across the eastern sections of the area where morning lows were in the 40s. And the moisture has returned with lots of clouds visible for today.

The culprit for all of these changes is a trough situated over eastern Texas that should be zipping across the Southeast US today, sweeping those rain chances in and out quickly. Looking at the radar this morning you might think we’d see a lot of rain, but it looks like the best rain chances will be confined closer to the Gulf coast region. But it will be mild today with highs in the 60s.

The upper short wave zips across the area quickly and is gone by tomorrow as an upper ridge moves into place. This should lead the way to a couple of really nice days with afternoon temperatures in the 70s.

Late Tuesday and early Wednesday we’ll begin to see some changes as a big trough drops into the Central US. This will develop a storm system that could disrupt travel for Thanksgiving as it moves out of the Central Plains into the Great Lakes area. For us, it will drag a cold front through Central Alabama on Thanksgiving setting the stage for some rain and perhaps some strong thunderstorms. The current model suggests the best time for rain here will come late Wednesday and early Thursday, but this timing could change a tad as the whole scenario comes together. This model run suggests a steady temperature on Thanksgiving or even falling temperatures for Northwest Alabama.

Friday the weather clears out and turns much colder with a rather brisk day with strong north and northeast wind. Over the weekend, there is some hints that as the upper low cuts off over the Southwest we could be setting up for an overrunning situation here. This is on the verge of voodoo country, so we’ll be keeping an eye on that to see how and if it unfolds.

Further into voodoo land there are lots of optimism for some rain chances as the overall pattern remains fairly progressive. A deep trough across the Central US promises another storm system around Monday or Tuesday, November 26 and 27. And there is some hint at a Gulf low around the end of the month. With rainfall deficits running well over 20 inches in Central Alabama, we’ll take all the rain opportunities we can get.

I had a great time at Veterans Park in Hoover yesterday at the Pet-A-Palooza. I got to walk with some of the folks and their pets. Weather was great and the dogs seemed to have a great time. James Spann should be back with the next Weather Xtreme Video by 7 am Monday morning. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving. God bless.
