* 300 seconds is how long it took for James Spann to eat lunch at Jim’s Pit BBQ in Billingsley Friday. He is truly a BBQ vacuum cleaner. The BBQ lifts off his plate as if an EF2 tornado was in the vicinity. He also ate his way through the BBQ Cookoff at Christmas on the River at Demopolis Friday evening. A sight to behold.
* 16 inches is how much snow Alta, Utah received during this latest storm.
* 5 below zero was the low at Bryce Canyon, Utah this morning. It was 4 above is Aspen, Colorado.
* 15 below zero at Wahpeton, North Dakota was the coldest in the lower 48 this morning.
* 92 at McAllen in the lower Rio Grande Valley of extreme South Texas was the hottest yesterday. That is 1 degree hotter than the normal high temperature in July for Birmingham.
* 33 inches was the snow depth at Silver Lake near Brighton, Utah this morning.
* 4.09 is how many inches of rain fell at Vallecito Dam in SW Colorado from this storm. There was some snow mixed in, but it was less than 2 inches. The weekend storm was great news for a large part of the mountain west where rain is sorely needed.
* 60 mph is how the wind is forecast in that big coastal nor’easter later today and tonight. This will be accompanied by 7 to 10 foot seas.
* 40 below zero was the coldest in Alaska this morning at Northway.
* 40 below zero was also the late morning temperature at Dawson in the Yukon Territory of NW Canada. That is one of my favorite weather stations to keep an eye on in wintertime. I have always believed that when the temperature reached 50 below zero at that location and the barometer builds to 1050 milibars or higher, that in a little over a week Birmingham will get a big freeze. (I have no proof.)
DID YOU KNOW?
…that if all of the earth’s water fit in a gallon jug, only a little over one tablespoon of that would be fresh water. That is less than 1/2 of 1% of the total.
…97% of the planet’s water is seawater.
…Another 2% is locked up in icecaps and glaciers.
…4,000 gallons of water is what it takes to produce 1 kilowatt hour of hydroelectric power. That is enough to light a 100-watt bulb for 10 hours.
