First of all, with temps having warmed to the lower and middle 40s around BHM, I think the chance of any snow accumulation today is near zero. Brian is right. Sorry, ladies and gentlemen.

But, precipitation is now widespread SE of I-59. The official observation at Montgomery is indicating sleet at 9 am, and reports of sleet have also come in from Anniston. One blog reader reported snow mixed with the rain.

As the 500 mb low moves in today, precipitation will continue to move across east Alabama, and with continued evaporation, low-levels of the atmosphere will keep cooling, so additional sleet or snow is possible through the day. No accumulations expected.

A secondary area of precipitation is developing further west, and light precipitation, possibly mixed with a little sleet, is possible in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham later this morning.

We came close. I had the game show losing noise wave file ready over the weekend, but I held off with the strong 500 mb disturbance. And, even though we won’t have snow accumulation, I think the sleet and snow mix reports at least keep me from having to play the losing noise. Like I said before, it’s easy as a researcher to sit back and look at small possibilities. If I had been on TV or at NWS, having to issue a definitive forecast, it would NOT have been for snow most of the time! If today wasn’t Christmas, would we have even been talking about this much?

Anyway, it’s been fun, and I hope you see a snow flake or a sleet pellet today! Email me pictures of it if you see it! ([email protected]).
