The latest edition of the ABC 3340 Weather Xtreme Video is available in the player below and on iTunes.

An active weather pattern continues across the US as we see a day of transition today. Clouds extended all the west to East Texas this morning. Morning soundings showed the clouds to be about 5000 feet thick over Central Alabama and a bit thinner over Central Mississippi. I expect to see the clouds thin out today with some mixture of sun and clouds this afternoon. Temperatures will remain somewhat mild with highs in the upper 50s this afternoon.

But then clouds increase again tonight ahead of the next trough coming out of the Southwest US. That upper air storm system should initiate a surface low that will move northeastward dragging a cold front through Alabama late Friday. The dynamics with this storm system see favorable with the development of a strong low level jet that will help to destabilize the atmosphere. The question remains as to how far north the unstable air will progress. But SPC has placed Central Alabama in a slight risk area for Day 2, Friday into early Saturday. I think the timing will be favorable with the main weather from late morning into early evening. And forecast wind profiles appear favorable for supercells with isolated tornadoes.

After the front passes late Friday, Saturday will be another transition day with dry conditions though we may still see a good deal of clouds. The upper air pattern brings another rain threat to the area on Sunday before we see the upper trough intensify and dig way southward. Look for some Arctic air to plunge into the Southeast with a very deep trough over the eastern part of the country by the start to 2008. We are likely to see lows in the 20s by January 2nd with highs struggling to get out of the 30s.

The longer range GFS model solution keeps a relatively active pattern in place. This could mean additional rain possibilities around the 6th and the 9th-10th. But my attention will be focused on the severe weather potential for Friday and the rain Sunday.

The next Weather Xtreme Video should be posted by 9 or so on Friday morning since I’ll be filling in for Jason Simpson once again. I hope that you have a good Thursday. God bless.
