He was young.

Very young–maybe 5 or 6 years old.

But he called the USWB/NWS dozens of time over a period of several years. The only thing he ever asked, is “How many degrees is it?”

We would say “48” just to use an example.

He would say “thank you” (his only two words) and hang up

Even if snow was on the ground, he would not ask about that, only, “how many degrees it?”

One night I was working the evening shift, along with Jay Shelley, at Birmingham Airport, on a night when the thermometer was headed toward zero.

He called. “How many degrees is it?”

Jay replied, “Not many.”

The kid said “thank you” and hung up.

May use that in my book, “Scatterbrains and Scattered Showers” if EVER I get around to writing it. We had a number of callers over the years that called almost daily and asked the same thing. We called them our mascot callers. They just wanted to talk to someone.

He would be at least 50 years old now and I often wonder if he still has a longing to know the wind speed.

Who knows, he may be one of our ABC 33/40 Skywatchers!!
