BACK IN THE SADDLE: First off a big “thank you” to Brian Peters, J.B. Elliott, Bill Murray, Jason Simpson, and Ashley Brand for allowing me to have a little time off last week. It was needed and appreciated. Never saw 60 degrees where I was last week… so getting used to the Alabama blast furnace will take a day or two.
SUMMER DAYS: Be sure and scroll down for a review of summer weather in Alabama I wrote late last night. We are in that time of the year when weather changes are slow in coming. Subtle differences in temperatures aloft, outflow boundaries, tropical waves, etc are what we have to look for through August. The synoptic scale maps we show here often don’t tell the story.
TODAY AND TOMORROW: Not much overall change with the 5880 meter 500 mb ridge in place. In fact, it actually gets a little stronger, so look for afternoon highs in the 95-100 degree range with only a very slim risk of any one spot seeing an afternoon shower or storm.
REST OF THE WEEK: Heights back down ever so slightly over the latter half of the week, meaning highs drop a few degrees, and the risk of an afternoon shower or storm is a little higher. But, those afternoon storms should remain widely spaced, and widespread rain is not expected.
WEEKEND PEEK: Not much change in the overall weather situation for the weekend. Hot and humid, some risk of an afternoon storm in scattered spots, and highs in the 90s.
AT THE BEACH: Pretty routine weather is likely for the Gulf Coast through the weekend… about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day, with a brief passing shower or storm possible in a few spots. Highs along the immediate coast will be in the 80s, with 90s a few miles inland. The STT (sea surface temperature) at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this morning was 86.5 degrees (F).
TROPICAL WEATHER: A broad low is over the Caribbean this morning; this will be drifting northward in coming days, with some chance of slow development later in the week. This one could bring an enhanced chance of rain to parts of the Florida Peninsula in 6-8 days, but it should not impact our weather. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will record this week’s show at 8:30 CDT tonight… Grady Dixon and Renny Vandewege of Mississippi State will be our guests.
