LOOKING FOR RAIN: I often say this… it is a very rare summer day in Alabama when you can’t find at least one shower or thunderstorm during the heat of the day. A check of the radar at mid-afternoon sure enough shows a big storm in our state, but it is way down in Baldwin County between Bay Minette and Loxley, along Alabama 59. This storm is producing very heavy rain and lots of lightning… this storm is drifting to the west slowly. Up this way, nothing. We do note a few strong storms in scattered spots over North Georgia.

HEAT LEVELS: A few 3:00 temperatures around our state…

Montgomery 98
Tuscaloosa 97
Shelby County Airport 97
Birmingham 96
Gadsden 91

COMING DAYS: No serious change through mid-week… the upper ridge actually strengthens a bit, so we expect highs in the mid to upper 90s with only a small risk of any one neighborhood seeing an afternoon storm. Lots of hazy sunshine each day through Friday.

OUR WEEKEND: Heights are down just a bit over the weekend, so heat levels could drop a degree or two, but I doubt if anybody notices. We will mention widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, but nothing widespread.

TROPICS: Invest 94L in the Caribbean seems to be slightly better organized this afternoon… NHC has given this one a 50/50 chance of becoming a tropical depression south of Cuba. But, winds aloft should increase over that region in a few days, and this one probably won’t be a big issue other than producing heavy rain for Cuba, and possibly parts of South Florida. We sure need something like this around here to wet us down, but I am afraid we will have to wait. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

LONG RANGE: We note the 12Z GFS tries to bring continental air down into North Alabama in about 15 days… but don’t expect that to show up in future runs.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s episode tonight at 8:30 CDT… Grady Dixon and Renny Vandewege of Mississippi State will be our guests. Listen live on uStream here.
