RIGHT NOW: Strong storms continue to move through parts of Central and East Alabama, with a large mass of rain over the western counties of the state. The Birmingham Airport recorded a wind gust of 61 mph within the hour, and there have been reports of scattered tree and power line damage across the Birmingham metro area.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Blount, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Shelby Counties until 4:15… and the other stronger storms across North and East Alabama will also produce small hail, areas of high straight line winds, and lots of lightning through the evening hours.

We will maintain the chance of showers through the night as deep tropical moisture remains in place, and the upper trough persists to the northwest.

REST OF THE WEEK: Tomorrow also looks relatively wet, with periods of rain and a few thunderstorms. Most places will fail to reach 90 tomorrow due to the clouds and showers. Then, for Thursday and Friday, look for scattered to numerous showers and storms with a mix of sun and clouds. The high both days will be in the 87-90 degree range as we continue to get a nice break from the intense summer heat.

WEEKEND LOOK: No serious change. Moist air stays in place, and a general weakness in the upper ridge means a mix of sun and storms Saturday and Sunday with a high close to 90 degrees. The weekend won’t be a total wash-out, but no doubt we will have rain to deal with from time to time.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The 12Z operational GFS is not as bullish on rebuilding the ridge… it keeps us rather unsettled early next week with scattered to numerous showers and storms Monday and Tuesday. Then, fairly typical summer weather shows up as we head into July. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas…
