ALASKA STORY–60 BELOW TEMPERATURE AND 83 BELOW ZERO WIND SHIELD!
As bitter cold as we have seen it in a long, long time. It was 53 below this morning at Arctic Village, but it was a bitter 60 below zero at Chandalar Lake. The wiind chill dropped as low as 83 BELOW ZERO at Chandalar Lake. They were reporting moderate ice crystals. That happens when the air gets so bitter cold that it condenses the last little bit of moisture into ice crystals that just float about. It was 47 below in Barrow, 49 below at Nuiqsut and 44 below at Deadhorse.
A COLD MORNING IN ALABAMA
Not nearly as cold as we have seen earlier. Scroll down for an earlier post to see a representative list.
A BIG FIGHT OVER LOW TEMPERATURES
There is a feud going on between International Falls, Minnesota and Fraser, Colorado over who owns the trademark, “Icebox of the Nation.” The Town Manager of International Falls has responded to a law suit filed by Fraser with a countersuit. Fraser officials say their town has used the phrase since 1956, but International Falls claims they have used it since 1948. The law suits asked that city officials prove their claim.
Can you imagine fussing over that? I once visited Fraser and photographed the town and visited in the home with the official coop observers at the time. Took a picture of the instrument shelter. It is quite a place in a deep valley in the Colorado Rockies.
Many years ago, the Chamber of Commerce at Pueblo petitioned the U. S. Weather Bureau headquarters to stop using Fraser at the bottom of the daily Temperature and Precipitation Table that appeared in newspapers across the country. They list the national extremes at the bottom of the long list. Their reason was that it hurt business prospects for the state of Colorado. I wrote a letter to the Denver Post explaining, if that was the case, that Wyoming could complain about Big Piney, Minnesota about International Falls and Arizona about the blistering heat in Yuma.
Life goes on. It is always interesting.
