Widespread precipitation continues moving NE across the state at the midday hour. Some light precipitation has spread as far north as Marion County. Probably the most significant precipitation is from Jefferson County southward to the coast.

We have had numerous reports of sleet all morning. Within the last hour or so, we have received several reports of snowflakes, including some in the Birmingham area.

Noon temperatures were around the 40-degree mark across the Tennessee Valley and in Gadsden. Birmingham had 43, which is the warmest so far today, Tuscaloosa 40. It was also in the 40s over NE Alabama.

Therefore, there should be no ice accumulations at all in the sleet areas, however, NWS in Huntsville advises there could be some light ice accumulation above the 1,500 foot level over NE Alabama tonight. This includes places like Mentone, DeSoto State Park and Hytop, among others. The NWS said that freezing rain and sleet would be possible in those higher elevations through about 4:00 tomorrow morning. Ice accumulation of up to 1/10 inch is possible in those higher elevations. Slick spots will be possible, especially on elevated roadways and bridges, but widespread problems are not anticipated, even in that higher terrain.

A couple of late reports:
The ABC 33/40 skywatchers report light snow in Crumly Chapel, getting a bit heavier. It was preceded by a good amount of sleet. Our skywatcher in Jasper say snow flurries were beginning.
