RADAR UPDATE: Sure seems like the most active storms today are on the outflow boundary left over from last night’s thunderstorm mass over North-Central Alabama. The storms today are generally south of a line from York to Linden to Selma, and then on to Lake Martin and Roanoke.
Very heavy rain is falling over the southern half of Marengo County as I write this (around Sweetwater and Dixons Mills), with other very strong storms over Wilcox and Lowndes Counties. Like recent days, these storms are barely moving due to light winds aloft.
Showers over North Alabama are few and far between at this point, but some could form at any time as we go through the evening hours.
BELOW NINETY: Birmingham reports 88 degrees at 2:00… we will probably touch 90, but certainly this heat is nothing bad at all for July in Alabama. Haleyville is down to 76 thanks to earlier showers.
REST OF THE WEEK: Not much overall change through Friday. Not much convective inhibition, so the combination of moist, unstable air and the daytime heating process (not to mention mesoscale boundaries) will lead to scattered to numerous, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms on a daily basis. Highs will be mostly in the low 90s.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK: The upper ridge is forecast to strengthen a bit, so showers and storms could be a little fewer in number, and heat levels a little higher, but the changes will be very subtle. Highs Saturday and Sunday should be in the low to mid 90s.
RAIN UPDATE: With yesterday’s big downpour, the rain total for 2011 at the Birmingham Airport is now 27.56″, with a deficiency of 2.10″ since January 1.
AT THE BEACH: Pretty decent weather for the rest of the week… at least 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with a few scattered showers and storms. Highs around 90; the water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 87 degrees.
TROPICS: All remains quiet across the vast Atlantic basin and tropical storm formation is not expected through the rest of the week.
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
