Looks like Central Alabama could stay drier than we’d like it to be thanks to our location between two systems. A weak area of lowered pressure in the eastern Gulf and across Central and South Florida continued to drift northwestward while a weak short wave was moving in our direction from the northwest. The presence of either of these systems would be welcome, but the combination of the two could result in reduced rain chances across Central Alabama, the area between the two.
But it still appears likely that we will be having some potential for scattered showers today. However, as the upper ridge builds back into our area from the west, I expect to see shower potential drop back to an isolated nature as the afternoon heat rises with some possibility that we could approach 100 degrees by Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The ridge weakens a tad toward the end of next week allowing the heat to abate a bit but we’ll still stay well above seasonal averages for the foreseeable future.
The QPF forecast suggests a minima in rainfall across Central Alabama as the two systems interact. Still with the spotty nature to showers some locations will see a nice rain with one half to one inch in the stronger storms.
SPC outlooking an area from just east of Memphis to the Mid-Atlantic Coast on Day 1 and in the North Central US. Day 2 focuses primarily on the Upper Mid-West with a marginal risk of severe storms in the Carolinas. And I’ve mentioned that the Hurricane Center is noting the weak low pressure in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but tropical storm formation is unlikely to occur.
Voodoo country had a really nice look to it yesterday, but that deep trough over the eastern US has been replaced by the dreaded ridge in the GFS run this morning. Alas, the nature of those long range projections!
