ANOTHER STORMY AFTERNOON: Again today, scattered to numerous thunderstorms have fired up across Alabama. The storms are drifting to the south, and are producing very heavy rain, lots of lightning, and gusty winds. Minor flooding and some tree damage has been reported within the past couple of hours with the stronger storms. The thunderstorms will settle down tonight once the sun goes down.

TOMORROW AND SATURDAY: Really more of the same. Occasionally cloudy with a good chance of showers and storms both days. Guidance continues to suggest we won’t see 90 on these days, with a high in the 85-89 degree range for most places thanks to the clouds and showers. I doubt if anybody will gripe about that. Like recent days, the storms will be heavy in spots, and most of them will come during the afternoon and evening hours (although we can’t rule out the chance of a morning shower).

SUNDAY AND NEXT WEEK: Unfortunately, the ridge begins to strengthen again. This means increasing amounts of sunshine, increasing heat levels, and fewer showers and storms. Highs creep back into the mid 90s… if we had dry soil, we would probably be taking triple digit heat. But, with the excellent top soil moisture in place now, it will be very hard to reach 100 even with a 5950 meter 500 mb ridge overhead.

TROPICS: While the Atlantic basin is generally quiet, it sure looks like the wave train is trying to crank up… we see one wave halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the African coast, and another one emerging off the coast of Africa. Another decent wave is in the far Southwest Caribbean, but development there is unlikely.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Expect about 4-6 hours of sunshine each day through Sunday along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with the daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The sea water temperature is running in the upper 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
