Okay, so the headline is a teaser to get you to watch the video, but it does appear that we may see a brief change in the weather pattern in about a week. The upper ridge continues to show signs of moving westward relinquishing its hold on the Southeast US and Alabama. As that happens, a weak trough will dip into the eastern US. This will provide us with a slight northwesterly flow pattern which means at least relief from extreme heat. But developments way off south of Alaska next weekend could bring some relief to Alabama in the form of an air mass change.
As the big closed low and trough south of Alaska get stronger, it will pump up the ridge over the western US. This will in turn allow a fairly substantial trough over the eastern half of the country. This should happen next Sunday and Monday, verging on voodoo country I know, but with a fairly strong trough over the eastern half of the country, we could actually see a cold front move through the Southeast US and bring the air mass change we so desperately need (and want) to see to get relief from the high humidity.
SPC continues to focus their severe weather outlooks on the northern periphery of the upper ridge with a fairly extensive area of a slight risk from Ohio all the way to southwestern South Dakota. While the area changes shape a little on Day 2, the focus for organized severe weather remains well north of us.
Tropics are relatively quiet with eyes on what is left of Emily. Like Don, Emily has really fizzled and what’s left of her should be moving out into the Atlantic as a depression over the next several days. No other areas of interest are showing up at the moment.
Unfortunately the long range GFS brings the big upper ridge back into place, so even if some relief comes our way in a week, it looks like the heat will return.
