RIGHT NOW: Scattered showers and storms continue across Alabama this afternoon; the most numerous ones are along and east of I-65, over the eastern half of Alabama. The stronger storms in the 2:30 time frame are in the Anniston/Oxford area, packing lots of lighting and heavy rain. The storms are moving northeast, and we will maintain the risk of scattered showers and storms statewide tonight ahead of a cold front near Memphis.

Quite a contrast on either side of that front… at 2:00 Birmingham is reporting 85, but on the other side of the front Harrison, Arkansas is reporting a cool 55 degrees.

TOMORROW: The front will move slowly through North Alabama tomorrow morning, so a few lingering morning showers are possible, but we believe by afternoon most of the showers and storms will move down into South Alabama as drier air moves in. The sky will become partly sunny with a high close to 80.

OUR WEEKEND: Looking rain-free for now, with partly to mostly sunny, warm days and fair, cool nights. The high will be in the 80-84 degree range Saturday and Sunday, with lows down in the 50s.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: A few early evening showers and storms could wet-down a few high school stadiums tonight. Tomorrow night, we expect mostly dry weather everywhere except the far southeastern corner of Alabama. Temperatures tomorrow night will be a little more comfortable, too! Expect temperatures to drop from around 70 to the mid-60s by game’s end on Friday night.

Saturday, Alabama will host Arkansas at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30; the sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 82 degrees, falling into the 70s by the final whistle. Auburn will host Florida Atlantic at 6:00… the sky will be mostly clear at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with temperatures falling from near 77 at kickoff into the upper 60s by the fourth quarter. UAB will be at East Carolina for a 2:30 p.m. CDT kickoff; the weather in Greenville, NC will be wet with occasional showers and storms likely. Temperatures will be in the 70s during the game.

NEXT WEEK: A few isolated showers are possible Monday and Tuesday with a weak surface front stalling out around here, but widespread rain doesn’t look very likely. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to remain below hurricane strength over the next five days as it recurves over the open Atlantic east of the U.S. A decent tropical wave has emerged off the coast of Africa, and the rest of the Atlantic basin for now is quiet.
