Heavy rain has postponed Game One of the AL Division League Series between the Yankees and Tigers tonight in the Bronx.
The forecast had called for a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms this evening in New York City. But an approaching cold front triggered much heavier rain in New York City, unleashing a deluge that forced a postponement of the game. The game will be picked up tomorrow in the second inning and the second game played on Sunday, which was scheduled to be an off day.
OPHELIA/PHILIPPE
So often if seems our named storms come in romantic sounding pairs. That’s the case this weekend as our star-crossed tropical cyclones wander across the Atlantic.
Ophelia was downgraded earlier this week, but made a dramatic comeback, as advertised by the GFS, managing to become the third major hurricane of the year earlier today. Ophelia boasts top winds of 120 mph late tonight, sitting a little more than 300 miles south southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane is moving north at 19 mph, picking up speed with each passing hour. Ophelia is in an area of light wind shear and is still over warm water, so it will only slowly weaken today before quickly going downhill over the next couple of days. It will pass about 125 miles east of Bermuda late this afternoon. It will race north northeast and pass about 350 miles southeast of Nova Scotia Sunday night as it loses tropical characteristics and a little closer to Newfoundland on Monday morning before it starts off on the journey toward Europe.
Pining for his Ophelia, Philippe will meander westward for much of the week ahead. By late in the week, it will turn northward. It could become a fairly strong hurricane, much like Ophelia has. It eventually could be steered back into the Northeast U.S. by building high pressure over the Canadian Maritimes.
ELSEWHERE the tropical Atlantic is quiet.
FROST IN SPOTS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHTS?
Drier and colder air is flowing into Alabama and this will continue this weekend. We won’t get out of the 60s in most locations tomorrow and Sunday. Overnight lows will range from the upper 30s to lower 40s Saturday and Sunday nights. With lightening winds, protected valleys in North Central and North Alabama could see some light frost both nights.
Good sleeping weather tonight with lows in the middle 40s under clear skies.
