Another chilly morning with some freezing fog is isolated spots across Central Alabama. Most of the fog should burn off quickly clearing the way for lots of sun today. Some fast moving cirrus clouds moved across the state early this morning. Should warm up to 58 for highs today. And with high pressure the main feature, we should see a moderation of temperatures with highs into the lower 60s on Friday and Saturday.
Sunday I feel pretty certain we’ll see a cold front move rapidly across the state ushering in some very cold air to get 2012 off to a start. The front will be accompanied by clouds and perhaps a little very light rain. I’m still thinking that whatever rain we get will be very, very light. With a fairly deep long wave trough getting established over the eastern US, that opens the door to the deep freeze with lows dropping into the middle 20s and highs struggling to get out of the 40s for Monday and Tuesday. With the overall long wave trough over the eastern half of the country, it should keep us in colder than average conditions for most of the first week of 2012.
But one of the beauties of living in the Southeast US is that most of these cold spells are short lived. The GFS suggests that the pattern will moderate once again with another trough in the West and a southwesterly flow across the Southeast US bringing us back to average or slightly above average temperatures by the 10th and 11th.
