Tornadic storm now in extreme NW Tallapoosa county, just having crossed Highway 280. Numerous reports of wind damage and possible tornadoes with this storm.
This storm may have been enhanced by its location near a large boundary, or change in temperature. The sun has been out south of the storm, so temps are in the 70s, while north of the storm temps are in the low to mid 60s. This often provides a source for storm rotation. The storm has actually seemed to turn right a little, following the boundary.
Talking to Brian who is in the storm chaser in southern Chilton county, he has experienced very high winds and downed trees likely away from the circulation. Remember, even with the severe thunderstorms without tornadoes, very strong winds just off the surface may be transported down to the ground by storm downdrafts…bringing winds up to 50 mph or higher.
