Interesting turn of events yesterday with the formation of a tropical storm off the South Carolina coast. Someone forgot to inform Alberto that the 2012 hurricane season doesn’t begin for about 10 days! While interesting, Alberto will have little impact on our weather as a summer-ish pattern continues for us. With a surface high in place across the eastern US and no significant upper systems to trigger storms, we remain in a pattern where we’ll see only isolated storms for the next couple of days.

An upper short wave will move across the Southeast US primarily on Monday night and Tuesday providing us with the best chance for some showers. However, with moisture somewhat limited, I expect the showers and thunderstorms to be scattered so it is possible that some spots won’t get any rain. Rainfall amounts for locations that do catch a shower are expected to be a half inch or less.

The forecast goes back into a dry pattern Wednesday and into the end of next week and next weekend as an upper ridge becomes established over the Southeast US. That ridges gets pretty strong by Friday and into the weekend, so I expect to see our highs perhaps nudge into the lower 90s.

Alberto is expected to change little over the next several days. It will meander for a couple of days before moving off toward the northeast ahead of the system pushing through the Southeast US on Tuesday. Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for a good portion of the South Carolina coastal area.

The GFS has begun advertising a substantial trough moving through the Mississippi Valley around June 1st. That appears to be our next significant shot at some rain. For the month, rainfall is a tad ahead of what is typical for May while for the year we remain about 2 and a half inches below the average through late May.

I had a great time judging the Do Dah Day parade Saturday at the Do Dah Day event in Caldwell and Rhodes Parks. The dogs seem to know it is their special day. James Spann will be back Monday morning with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video. I hope your day is a good one. Godspeed.
