WATCHING THE RADAR: While we have scattered showers and storms in progress across Alabama this afternoon, our attention is focused on the MCS (mesoscale convective system) over Arkansas and West Tennessee. Ahead of this, SPC has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the northwest corner of Alabama until 9:00 p.m… and if those storms hold together a new watch could be required farther south and east. There will be a significant risk of damaging wind with this line of storms as it enters Northwest Alabama later this afternoon, so pay attention to severe thunderstorm warnings as they are issued.
Temperatures this afternoon are generally in the upper 70s and low 80s, although some West Alabama communities are warmer because they have seen more sunshine today.
TOMORROW: We will need to hang on to a chance of showers and thunderstorms tomorrow as a surface cold front approaches. Won’t rain all day, and the day should be warmer with a high in the mid to upper 80s. We also note high dew points (around 70 degrees), along with rather high forecast instability values, meaning some of the storms tomorrow could be strong.
WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: These days will be hotter; with a high in the 89-92 degree range Wednesday and Thursday, and upper 80s Friday. You might see a few showers on radar during this period, but they should be few and far between.
OUR WEEKEND: Not much change. Looks generally dry with only isolated showers and storms Saturday and Sunday. The GFS is printing a high of 87 Saturday, and 85 Sunday… which should be pretty close to being correct.
NEXT WEEK: Looks like the weather begins with a quiet pattern early next week with temperatures near seasonal averages. The good news is that we don’t see any serious heat issues here for the next 10 to 15 days. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.
