. . .from whence cometh our weather.
At least most of it.
And there is plenty of it out there tonight waiting to come our way.
Just before 8 o’clock tonight, there were no showers in Alabama. Nearest ones, quite light, were in Mississippi and few in number.
The main thunderstorms tonight were over Arkansas and NW Louisiana. Much lightning was concentrated over SW Arkansas and Extreme NE Texas.
TORNADO WATCHES
Two in effect. They both go until 2 am, CDT for:
West Kentucky
West Tennessee
Arkansas, except NW
NE and East Texas
Both are “regular” tornado watches. Earlier today, two PDS Tornado Watches were posted (Particular Dangerous Situation) However, the only confirmed tornado was an EF0 on the Texas Coast cutting a path 100 yards wide by 2.5 miles long. Does not appear to be major damage. A number of wind damage reports today and it is possible that later inspection will show some of that was tornado damage.
MAJOR FLOOD PROBLEMS
This is an exceptionally wet severe weather event. DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) Airport got 2.11 inches of rain today along with some powerful wind gusts. Other rain today:
3.35 Sparta, Mo.
2.33 St. Louis
3.00 Salem, Mo.
WIDESPREAD FLOOD PROBLEMS
Widespread river and flash-flooding continues over NW Arkansas tonight. 8.12 inches of rain has fallen at Silver Hill, in Searcy County, Ark. 8.53 inches reported 6 miles NW of Snowball, Ark., also in Searcy County. Flooding is occurring over all of Stone County, Ark., and the sheriff has asked people to not attempt travel Numerous roads are closed. Ironically, the sheriff explained that the floods were made worse because of the tornadoes back on February 5. Storm debris left over from the tornado is clogging ditches and drains.
BACK HOME IN ALABAMA–WHEN WILL IT GET HERE?
We still believe it will be near daybreak before strong thunderstorms reach the western border of Alabama and around mid-morning for the Birmingham Metro area. That time line could change.
We will be up before the crows, cats and dogs posting here on the blog with progress reports starting very early tomorrow morning. I plan to get up about 3 am. James will have his usual morning video discussion. Bill Murray is also standing by.
Stay tuned . . .
