Temperatures were not too chilly this morning with sunrise temperatures running mainly in the upper 30s. Lots of sunshine will help to take temperatures to around 60 today, but cold air continues to advect into Central Alabama. With clear skies tonight and Monday night, we will see morning lows on Monday and Tuesday dip to around freezing. That means that some locations will dip into the upper 20s for lows. And with nearly calm conditions, I expect to see a good deal of frost. So be sure to take that into account if you have plants that need protection – and don’t forget your pets!
But in fairly typical Southeast US fashion, the warmup begins in earnest on Tuesday and we should recover nicely with highs topping out in the 70s for much of the latter portion of the week.
And for now, the weather looks dry for the upcoming week. The next really serious chance for rain appears to come in the Friday-Saturday time frame. A nice upper low develops across the northern Rockies on Thursday and moves across the Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday. While a little north of Alabama, it should drag a cold front with some rain through Central Alabama during the first half of Saturday. This currently does not appear to be a major cold snap with only a slight drop in temperatures.
The overall pattern further afield remains active just displaced a bit further north than we’ve seen over the last couple of months. I am concerned with the shift north since it was about this time last year that the rain was cut off and we ended up with a terribly dry 2007. I hope that is not happening again. We’ve recovered somewhat but the recovery needs to continue and not stop.
I’ll be filling in for Ashley Brand this afternoon and evening plus I’m looking forward to delivering a storm spotter talk in Pell City on Monday at 6:30 pm at the Jeff State Pell City Campus location just off 231. I hope your Easter Sunday is a good one. God bless.
